Art at the Heart, the RUH Patient Experience Team and Friends of the RUH have collaborated to create arts, crafts and activity bags which are all for single patient use only. These projects stemmed from a need to provide distraction and stimulation for patients during the pandemic, when visits from loved ones or artists wasn’t allowed. These have now become a staple resource as we move into a ‘new normal’; allowing for more choice and patient reach than before.
The single bags have 2 options: sketch book, drawing materials and watercolours or knitting needles, pattern and wool.
“Creative activities relieve pressure on staff and help patients to express their individuality. The use of fine motor skills enables patients to practice these skills alongside the social and clinical aspect of a shared experience with others.” RUH Occupational Therapist
This year we have distributed 200 arts and crafts bags and have 300 activity bags ready for distribution.
Furthermore, we provide art and activity bags for patients with dementia and the Dementia coordinators can tailor these accordingly.
The End of Life team also keep a stock of bags for patients.
The Friends of the RUH are generously funding these materials and activity books. We hope to develop this project over the long term as a resource for clinical support staff and volunteers to use as a resource.
