Wellbeing Garden Project & Artist Commission

Over the summer and into early autumn, the RUH has been alive with creativity as part of an inspiring new art project for the Lansdown Wellbeing Garden. Local artist Edwina Bridgeman was commissioned by Art at the Heart to lead a series of workshops, bringing together staff, volunteers, patients, and visitors to co-create a brand-new sculpture installation.

The project invited creativity from across the RUH community, including young patients on the Children’s Ward, hospital staff and volunteers, as well as around 70 members of the public who joined in during the RUH Community Day on 13th September.

“Regular art workshops please! The workshop was so much fun and would love to be involved with more.” Radiologist

Participants helped transform wooden posts into vibrant “beads” – each one individually cut, primed, and beautifully decorated. The result is a striking collection of up to 120 unique beads, each one reflecting the imagination and spirit of its maker. These will soon be threaded onto steel poles and installed throughout the woodland garden, forming a trail of colourful, uplifting sculptures that wind through the landscape.

Edwina Bridgeman, who has worked with patients at the RUH since 2005, is renowned for her sensitive, inclusive approach to participatory art. Her ability to engage people of all ages in meaningful creative expression has once again brought something truly special to the hospital grounds.

“We need participatory art workshops back. They have really filled the whole Children’s ward playroom with activity and as taking place over two days, longer stay patients have returned on the second day to paint even more totem pole beads.” Play Specialist

This collaborative project has been made possible thanks to funding from NHS Charities Together and RUHX. The final installation is expected to be unveiled in December, and promises to be a joyful, lasting addition to the garden – a true celebration of hope, community, and creativity.
